TGIF Interview … Viki Lyn

July 16th, 2010 by Amanda Young

vl_lastchance_coverlg.jpg Please welcome Viki Lyn to the blog, author of Ryan’s Harbor and Last Chance.  Thank you for agreeing to answer my nosy questions and share them with everyone visiting today.Q: To begin, please share which genre(s) you write in…

A: I write m/m romance, a new genre for me and one that I fell in love with after my first story was written. Also, I’ve written a paranormal romance epic with angels and priestesses (not yet found a home for it). Paranormal is also a new genre that I began to explore over a year ago. My first published books are historical romances under another pen name.

Q: How long did you write before you received your first contract for publication?

A: About six years of writing short stories and fan fics. It took me a while to learn how to write a decent story and I’m still learning the craft. It’s a long term study and an arduous process, but I find it challenging and fun, so I keep doing it!

Q: Out of all the stories you’ve written, which is your favorite?

A: This is a hard one because each story is unique (I hope, anyway! LOL). Last Chance flowed easier than others, and I love twisting the vampire mythos into a world I specifically created. There is a special place in my heart for my ‘straight’ gay romances (traditional) because I love to read them.

Q: Do you need to be in a specific place or atmosphere before the words flow?

A: No, and I move around a lot - I have a laptop and I’m always taking it to the local coffee house, or plopping it on my kitchen table where there is more sunlight than my office, or perching it on my lap while watching the golf or football.

Q: If you could offer one tidbit of information for new writers, what would it be?

A: Keep at it! That’s it…if you have a passion for writing then that will carry you through the tough times. Even though I’ve been published I still get rejections, writer’s block, self-doubt creepy crawlies, all that stuff that plagues new writers, too. It’s my love of the creative process that keeps me going, and hearing from my readers.

Q: Name one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you.

A: I have over 300+ yaoi mangas hidden in my closet along with my hundreds of DC comics - I’m a Batman/Robin (the original Dick Grayson) fan girl. I love reading slash about these two superheroes together.

Q: What’s your favorite dirty word?

A: In writing, f*** - uh, can I spell this out here? Since I deal with two men, I use more swearing in my dialogue, but not always the f word.

Q: Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

A: Oh god no! I’m really NOT into needles. If I was younger and had a nice firm stomach I might have pierced my belly button. I’m too flighty for a tattoo - there’s no image or symbol or name I want permanently marked on my skin!

Q: If you could be intimate with three people (not necessarily all at one time *g*) without getting in trouble with your significant other, who would they be?

A:

1.     First, I’d risk it with one night with Lord Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) because his character is such a romantic. And can you image being made love to with sweet Elvish whispering in your ear?

2.     Darcy from Pride and Prejudice because he’s such an alpha male - all that simmering tension beneath the surface has to be explosive in bed.

3.     Batman: The Dark Knight - all that brawn and muscle and dark, dark angst he carries around with him is just too sexy to resist one night with the man.

I guess my husband doesn’t need to worry about me cheating on him since all my choices are fictional!

Q: If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you spend the money on?

A: New car for my husband, then sock the money away for traveling. I’m not a diamond and fur kind of girl. I rather travel the world and rent villas in Tuscany, and beach houses on the isle of Crete. Also, part of the money would be set aside for special charities.

Q: Which household chore do you abhor and why?

A: Ugh, cleaning the bathrooms - getting on my hands and knees to scrub anything just isn’t my idea of fun. Well, okay, there are some reasons where I might change my mind, but not cleaning toilets and bathtub and shower stalls.

Q: What’s your favorite comfort food?

A: Cinnamon rolls J

Q: If you don’t mind sharing, would you tell us about your latest work in progress?

A: I just finished a ‘coming out’ story for Loose Id on a proposal. It’s about a closeted ex-NFL player and an openly gay artist. The title will be Forward Pass or Out of Bounds, not sure which one will be used, and if it works out my release date is October. This book is by far the hottest book I’ve written so far, with double the sex scenes! Not sure why it turned out that way, but it just kind of happened.

And, I’m in the middle of writing the vampire sequel to Last Chance. This is Corbin’s story (Stu’s brother) with the majority of the story set in the kresnik and vampire worlds. It’s ‘more’ paranormal than Last Chance but still with a very hot romance btw the two characters.

Q: In closing, tell us a bit about your latest release (& share a yummy excerpt for those who aren’t yet familiar with your work)

A: Ryan’s Harbor is my current release with Aspen Mountain Press. This book is part of my Woodland Village series (Blue Skye the first book) but is a read-alone - with reoccurring characters, but you don’t need to read the first book. It’s a traditional romance and some readers argue a ‘gay for you’ story, although Ryan is very fluid sexually.

Here’s a blurb and excerpt:

The boys of Woodland Village are back. This time it’s Drew’s brother, Ryan Adams, that’s going through a crisis of doubt. He’s always been the guy who breezed through relationships, never getting serious with the women he dates. He doesn’t know why, but one-night stands and pretty women don’t seem to give him that buzz that it once did. Then one night, at his brother’s barbecue, he encounters Drew’s assistant, Martin Pierson.

Martin is hired to design Ryan’s new building for his gaming company - Fantasy Arts. As they spend time together in and out of the office, their working relationship grows into friendship. But can they cross the barrier into love?

Ryan drove into the Fantasy Arts parking lot at three a.m. He recognized his team’s cars and smiled at their determination to play all night. He pulled in next to the Jeep and shut the motor. What a night! He hadn’t had that much fun since…well since his days spent with Steven.

Martin turned in his seat and faced Ryan. “I had a great time. Thanks.”

Wasn’t he just thinking that? “Yeah, me too.” How lame, but suddenly he had blank-brain.

Martin looked down at his hands and then at Ryan as if expecting something, but Ryan had no clue what he wanted.

“Well, it’s late.” Martin reached for the door handle. “Next time I’ll take all your money.”

Ryan leaned over the stick shift and let his hand rest on Martin’s thigh. “Like hell you will.” When they’d switched to pool, he’d won thirty back. He looked forward to a rematch.

Martin looked down at Ryan’s hand, his smile wavering. “Gotta go.”

Ryan pulled back as Martin let himself out.

From his rear view mirror, he watched Martin pause, look up at the sky and then back down, before resuming his walk. He was surprised when Martin stopped suddenly and turned. He came around to Ryan’s side of the car and tapped on the window.

Ryan rolled down the window, and Martin peered in, his eyes glittering green and catlike in the dark. “I forgot. I need your input on the final details of the atrium. Let’s meet in a couple of days at my office. There are some issues we need to consider.”

Ryan couldn’t help but stare into those feral eyes. They seemed to hypnotize him. “Ah, sure. The atrium, right.”

“Are you okay?”

He forced a smile. “Yeah, just tired.”

Martin tilted up Ryan’s chin and stared down with all seriousness. “Christ, I’m a fool.”

With no apology, Martin kissed Ryan, a hot earthy kiss full of fire. Ryan’s heart drummed in his chest and he was too stunned to react. He let Martin’s tongue explore freely, expertly drawing out their breaths. The moist tip of Martin’s tongue licked across his lips, his teeth nipping and sucking, teasing the seam of his mouth. Strong hands gripped his hair and held him steady as the crafty tongue invaded his mouth. Their tongues met and a bitter taste of beer hit the back of his throat.

Fuck, the man can kiss.

This brought up images of what else Martin was capable of doing with that experienced mouth. This is what he’d wanted. All night…since Martin had stepped foot into Fantasy Arts.

Ryan’s world blurred around him. He circled his arms around the warm neck and kissed back. He reached for Martin’s firm shoulders but didn’t push him away. Unable to reason why, he parted his mouth for more.

Ryan’s cock swelled in his jeans making it uncomfortable to stay still. What was Martin trying to do to him? All his senses were firing on red alert. His groin burned, his dick was rock hard. And then reality crashed over him. He was kissing a gay man who expected more.

I’m thrilled to have you here, Viki. I’d say the fictional aspect just means you have a very good imagination. :D
